California is Completely Drought-Free for the First Time in a Quarter Century.
After a quarter-century span, not a single part of California is enduring drought conditions. This landmark event comes on the heels of difficult years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated fire dangers and pressured its massive agricultural sector.
A Map Shows An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas
A recent update from the U.S. Drought Monitor showed that the entire state is without drought or abnormal dryness. This shift resulted from weeks of heavy precipitation that topped up major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their long-term norms.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve only known in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” stated a climate scientist.
From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays
Achieving this status featured severe and lethal winter storms that battered the state in recent years, causing extensive inundation, power outages, and tragic losses. While those storms helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.
As late as late December, areas like northeastern California were considered abnormally dry. Heavy rains at the beginning of January finally erased those final dry conditions.
A Crucial Snowpack Is Below Average
But, hydrologists note that drought-free conditions should not be confused with complete water security. Current readings of the Sierra Nevada snowpack place it at only about 70% of the typical level.
This snowpack, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's usable water as it thaws later in the year, is an essential component for future water availability. Water officials have emphasized that it is premature to draw conclusions for the coming year.
“The current pattern right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” commented a California water official. “The goal is the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”
Although the monitor shows a clean slate, attention turns to preserving this hard-won hydrological health for the months to come.
