On the eve of his six-year milestone in charge, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his continued role with the club is fundamentally dependent to achieving success.

Reflecting on: Six Years in Charge

The former Arsenal captain was appointed on December 20th, 2019 and promptly led the team to an cup win within months. Yet, that first major trophy remains his sole major honor following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” the manager said upon being asked about his future past 2027. “But it’s about today. And numerous factors have to happen in the coming months as well to earn the right.”

He will mark the landmark with a match versus Everton, the very same club Arsenal met immediately following his hiring was confirmed.

League Position and Pressure

As second-placed Manchester City playing against West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal could be displaced first place in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This situation arises even with Arteta presiding over a squad that has suffered over 100 injuries over the course of last season.

He currently has 18 months to run on the contract he inked in 2024, but is acutely aware that results must come in the immediate future.

Earning the Right

Arteta elaborated, stressing the ongoing need to prove his worth. “I think a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you talk here, how you go into the dressing room, the signal you send.”

He stated further, commending the consistent faith from the hierarchy, yet identifying the squad's dedication as the key factor. “Ultimately, the key individuals are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, willingness to improve and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

Arsenal faces the weekend fixture coping with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a strain that is likely to keep him out for a few weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Despite the fitness woes and the high-stakes environment, Arteta is confident the club's “objectives and communication” are profoundly distinct from when he began his reign.

The manager referenced the team's performances as proof they are close. “Examine the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the level we are at.”

Arteta concluded, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
