The Contents of the Case Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?
Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress built from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for an escape route in episode 6 has them witness again a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—an event that potentially carries the key to defeating him once and for all.

A Journey Into the Cavern
After locating Max in the world called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a telescope taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.
They watch a Henry as a boy find an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the act involved more than a defensive killing.
Similar to other plot points of the final season, the truth about the events in the tunnel originates in the theatrical production the prequel play.
An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science
*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a realm known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who returned in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.
That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their parallel research. This spy in the tunnel was that very thief.
The Briefcase's Contents
Given what is understood of his research, the case almost certainly contained samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would genetically impart to the children under Brenner's care.
Alternatively, the box could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. The stage play explains that Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning hours later as a different person. From then on, he fights the whispers of a dark entity, reminiscent of how Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in the past.
The Power of Fear
His lasting fear of that cave shows how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a showdown between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to become stronger.
His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a key upper hand in the endgame conflict ahead.
