New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.

"The choice rested on our family's safety and the need to focusing all of my focus on implementing the affordability agenda voters voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside inside me and the work I do," he said.

Political Debate

During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his critics, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment even though he came from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings a stark contrast to his modest Astoria digs.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city sets limits on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses exceeds the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
